The “I Thirst” Spiritual Exercises are an adaptation of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.

They are a means for the contemplation of the spirituality of Mother Teresa through the mysteries of salvation history.  Through them we invite Jesus’ Spirit to transform the light of Love contained in the mystery of His Thirst into our life.

Those wishing to use this material for daily meditation (or what is commonly called “Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life”), may wish to use the following table as a broad guideline for dividing the year into two six-month meditation cycles; the first of which follows the liturgical seasons, while the second runs its course independently of major feasts.

Since each “Week” of the Exercises (approximately 10 meditations) is spread over a four to six-week period, we suggest that each meditation be divided over three to four days of prayer and reflection (including the material from the accompanying instruction which precedes each meditation).  This can be done by dividing the meditation points as the Holy Sprit moves you.  One suggested method:

  •         First Day:

Instruction materials

  •         Second Day

first half of meditation

  •         Third Day

second half of meditation

  •         Fourth Day

what St. Ignatius calls a “repetition” of the points where you found most grace or light or challenge (or even repugnance), so as to go deeper into those areas where your spirit was moved

At the end of each day’s prayer, some written review should be made (rather than only at the end of the three or four day cycle).  Suggestions for the written review will follow later in the text.  Here are the two Cycles:

Cycle I

Sp. Exercises

Cycle II

Advent

(three days per meditation)

Week One

mid-June through July

(four days per meditation)

Christmas to Ash Wednesday

(four days per meditation)

Week Two

August to mid-September

(four days per meditation)

Lent

(four days per meditation)

Week Three

mid-Sept. to mid-October

(three days per meditation)

Easter Season

(four days per meditation)

Week Four

mid-October to Advent

(four days per meditation)

Even for those who are not undertaking the six-month commitment of the “Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life” (though we would strongly recommend this in-depth experience suggested by St. Ignatius), we still advise that however often these meditations are used, they be followed in their original order so as to derive their fullest fruit and impact.
